Valentina Elangbam, a 9-year-old girl from Manipur, who was seen crying in a viral video after two trees that she had planted and nurtured for years were cut has now been appointed as the first 'Green Ambassador' of Manipur.
Manipur CM N Biren Singh appointed Valentina as the ¡°Green Ambassador¡± for ¡°Chief Minister¡¯s Green Manipur Mission¡± and all official plantation activities taken up in the State in recognition of her immense love and exemplary affection for the trees and to generate mass awareness on conservation of environment.
On Saturday, when the authorities who were involved in a road-widening project in Kakching District fell two Gulmohar trees, aged around five years old as part of their work.
The trees were planted by Valentina, who became heartbroken after seeing her trees gone. The video of her crying inconsolably was posted by a relative on social media and it went viral.
When Chief Minister Biren Singh saw the video he asked district officials to visit her house to console her and gift her some saplings.
Later, he also appointed Valentina, a Class V student of Amutombi Divine Life English School, Wabagai as the Green Ambassador of the state.
As 'Green Ambassador' she will be involved in various plantation programs in the state and will be a part of the advertisements and campaigns to promote green cover in Manipur.
The Green Manipur Mission was launched last month by the state government to restore protected forest areas in each village of the State.
Last year, Manipur had recorded a tremendous increase of 263 sq. Km in forest area making it the third-highest state in the entire country to have witnessed an increase in forest cover.
