However, the Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh remains unfazed by the sordid statistics, and approved a budget of Rs 447.46 crore to install the 221-metre tall statue of Lord Ram in Ayodhya. This amount will be used to purchase 61.38 hectares of land in Meerapur area.
The statue is part of the Ram Nagari Ayodhya project which will be installed on the banks of River Sarayu.
This amount will also be used for tourism development, beautification of Ayodhya, digital museum, interpretation centre, library, parking, food plaza, landscaping and other facilities.
A section of the country¡¯s progressive populace has been arguing that such a massive amount of money could be diverted towards social and economic progression instead of building statues. Sardar Patel¡¯s Statue of Unity in Gujarat was built at an estimated cost of Rs 2,989 crore.
The statue is currently the world¡¯s tallest at 182 metres (597 feet).
