The tribal farmers in Andhra kept on pleading for the restoration of their defunct irrigation canal. When these pleas were not listened to, the villagers of Sarika, Varaka and Chintalavalasa did the needful on their own without any outside help.
As per a report in The New Indian Express, silt built up in the canal due to the recent floods. Around 100 acres of farmland could not get water as a result.
The canal's source of water is the River Swarnamukhi.
'Authorities turned deaf ear'
¡°We took the issue to the notice of the officials concerned, but they turned a deaf ear to our woes,¡¯¡¯ said a Varaka farmer.
With no luck, the farmers hired a JCB to restore the canal. They themselves arranged for Rs 50,000 for the restoration.
¡°I will pursue the matter and help the tribal farmers. I will direct the panchayat secretary of the village to speak to the farmers in this regard,¡¯ said Saluru MPDO Parvathi.
An old adage says, where there is a will, there is a way and this incident is a valid example.
