Be it a war zone, flood, earthquake, wildfire or civil war, the Sikh community has always shown how they put humanity first and serve their fellow men and women in distress.
The recent violence in Delhi was no different. The Sikh community, under the direction of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC), was at the forefront of helping those who lost their loved ones and their savings of a lifetime.
Currently, several gurdwaras in the national capital have open shelters riot victims who are also be provided with langar and other needs.
They are also providing the langar in the violence-hit areas and at the GTB Hospital where the majority of the injured are admitted.
Now in an exemplary step towards harmony and brotherhood, the Muslim community in Saharanpur UP has ended a decade-long land dispute with the Sikhs as a gesture of gratitude for their service to the Delhi riot victims.
The dispute began after the Gurdwara Singh Sabha in Saharanpur had purchased a land adjacent Gurudwara in the Kutubsher area which had a private mosque. When the Singh Sabha started construction for extending the gurudwara in July 2014, a group of Muslims objected and soon the clash turned into a riot between the two communities claiming lives of three and injuring 26 others.
Both parties went to court after that and were fighting over it in the Supreme Court till recently.
But on Wednesday, leaders of the two communities came together and decided to end the dispute amicably.
Under the agreement, the Sikhs agreed to buy a plot of land in a minority-dominated area and construct a mosque there. Muslim representatives reciprocated by agreeing to perform kar seva in the expansion plan of the gurdwara committee.
But now the Muslim community went a step further and have decided to return the cheques given by the Sikhs to buy the land.
Muslim leaders said that the community will construct the Mosque with their own money and expressed hope that the Sikhs will use the money to construct for langar or dispensary which they have decided to name after Muslim saint Baba Farid.
A community leader also said that they wanted to thank the Sikh community who helped the Delhi riot victims.
¡°They said that the Sikh community has always stood for the cause of others like we started langar in Delhi for the riot victims recently. We are thankful to them,¡± Gurpreet Bagga, state unit president of Akali Dal, said.
