As the new Chairman of Tata Trusts which has 3 trusts, a position that was previously held by Ratan Tata, Noel will indirectly control the Tata Group, whose business empire is spread across 100 countries.
Noel Tata, the half-brother of the late Ratan Tata, has been appointed as the Chairman of Tata Trusts, giving him control of one of the biggest business houses in India. The 67-year-old, despite holding several key positions in the Tata Group during his over 40 years with the Tata Group, had maintained a low profile until now.
Role of Tata Trusts in Tata Sons
As the new Chairman of Tata Trusts, a position that was previously held by Ratan Tata, Noel will indirectly control the Tata Group, whose business empire is spread across 100 countries.
There are 13 trusts in the Tata Trusts, including the Tata Education and Development Trust, Navajbai Ratan Tata Trust, Tata Navsari Charitable Institution, and Sarvajanik Seva Trust, which are managed by a board of 13 trustees.
Biggest stakeholders in Tata Sons
Among these, the two major trusts are the Sir Ratanji Tata Trust and the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, which together own 66 per cent of Tata Sons Pvt Ltd - the holding company of the Tata Group.
Who owns Tata Sons
Tata Sons is 65.9 per cent owned by the trusts, making it the single-largest stakeholder, followed by Shapoorji Mistry, Chairman of the Shapoorji Pallonji Group, which owns an 18.3% stake.
Noel's wife, Aloo Mistry, is the daughter of Pallonji Shapoorji Mistry, and Cyrus Mistry, who was the Chairman of Tata Sons from 2012 to 2016, was his brother-in-law.
Half a dozen Tata Group companies own 12.87 per cent, and individuals from the Tata family own another 2.8 per cent of Tata Sons.
Why Noel Tata
Noel Tata has also been on the board of the key Sir Ratan Tata Trust and Sir Dorabji Tata Trust since 2019. His children ¨C Maya, Neville, and Leah ¨C were appointed as trustees in multiple trusts associated with the Sir Ratan Tata Trust and Sir Dorabji Tata Trust earlier this year.

Noel Tata, who is credited with expanding Tata's retail business, including Westside, Zudio, Croma, and more, said he was looking forward to carrying on the legacy of Ratan Naval Tata and the founders of the Tata Group.
"I am deeply honoured and humbled by the responsibility that has been cast on me by my fellow Trustees. I look forward to carrying on the legacy of Mr. Ratan N. Tata and the Founders of the Tata Group," Noel Tata said on Friday.
