Assam Floods: Situation Grim In State As 3 Dead, Nearly 5.74 Lakh People In 22 Districts Affected

The flood situation in Assam has deteriorated with three persons losing their lives and over 5 lakh people suffering with 22 out of 34 districts under water.

News reports have warned that hundreds of in Morigaon district have been forced to take shelter on the road after floodwaters entered their homes. At least 129 villages under two revenue circles, Mayong and Bhuragaon in Morigaon district, are reportedly flooded.

Affected districts

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), nearly 5.74 lakh people of 22 districts -- Barpeta, Biswanath, Bongaigaon, Chirang, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Goalpara, Golaghat, Jorhat, Kamrup, Kamrup (Metro), Lakhimpur, Majuli, Morigaon, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sivasagar, Sonitpur, South Salmara, Tinsukia -- are affected in the current deluge.

Worst-hit areas

Nalbari is the worst-hit district with more than 1.10 lakh people affected, followed by 1.09 lakh people in Darrang, 1.08 lakh people in Lakhimpur, 65,300 people in Majuli, 33,200 people in Dhemaji, 23,500 people in Biswanath, 23,300 people in Golaghat, 18,300 people in Sivasagar, 16,200 people in Nagaon, 16,700 people in Kamrup (Metro), 13,800 people in Jorhat district.

Over 1,200 villages under 61 revenue circles are reeling under floodwaters. The floodwaters from the Brahmaputra river and its tributaries inundated 39,831 hectares of agricultural land in the flood-hit districts.

So far, more than 4,000 people have been shifted to 26 relief camps set up by the district administration of 14 districts.

Damage to life, resources

The ASDMA flood report stated that more than 3.54 lakh animals have been affected in the current wave of floods. The rescue teams of SDRF, fire service, district administration on Tuesday rescued 1,018 people, 1,456 animals in Barpeta, Chirang, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Majuli and Morigaon district.

About 70% of the world heritage national park has been flooded so far. 125 of the 226 forest camps in it are affected by the deluge. Parcels of deer and herds of elephants have moved out of the park to safer areas while the one-horned rhinoceros population has taken refuge in the highlands of the park territory.

The flood waters on Tuesday damaged 50 roads in six districts including 29 roads in Morigaon district. Meanwhile, 18 anti-poaching camps out of 25 camps have been affected in Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary in central Assam's Morigaon district.
