At 3,947 New Infections, Delhi Sees Highest Single-Day Spike In COVID Cases Total Now At 66,602

The national capital Delhi which is fast tuning out to be the worst COVID-19 hit city in India recorded another grim milestone on Tuesday, recording 3,947 new infections in the past 24 hours.

Delhi had reported its previous high of 3,137 cases last week when it had crossed the 50,000-mark.

With this, the total number of cases in Delhi has risen to 66,602.

As of Wednesday morning, there are 24,988 active COVID-19 cases in Delhi while 39,313 of them have recovered and a total of 2,301 have died of the infection so far.

The metropolis reported 68 deaths in the last 24 hours alone.

Currently, Delhi is ranked second only Maharashtra which has seen 1,39,010 infections, in terms of the number of recorded cases.

If the figures from Delhi is compared with other cities, it will soon overtake Mumbai as the worst affected.

Mumbai's COVID-19 figures stand at 68,410 against the 66,602 cases in Delhi.

With the number of new infections rising at an alarming level, the Delhi government has decided to revamp the response plan to combat the outbreak. As per Delhi govt's response plan, every house in Delhi will be screened by July 6. Furthermore, every house that is in a containment zone will be screened by June 30.

On Tuesday, Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal had written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah inviting him to inspect the 10,000-bedded COVID-19 care centre at Radha Soami Satsang Beas campus in Chattarpur and also requested for deployment of doctors and nurses from ITBP and Army at the Centre.

Responding to him on Twitter, Shah said "It has already been decided in our meeting 3 days back and MHA has assigned the work of operating the 10,000 bed COVID Care Centre at Radha Swami Beas in Delhi to ITBP. The work is in full swing and a large part of the facility will be operational by 26th June."

"I would also like to inform the people of Delhi that a 1,000 bed full-fledged hospital with 250 ICU beds is being developed for COVID patients. DRDO and Tata Trust are building the facility. Armed forces personnel will man it. This COVID Care centre will be ready in next 10 days," Shah said in another tweet.

With more and more asymptomatic and patients with mild symptoms sent to home isolation, Kejriwal had said that his government will give pulse oximeters to the patients in the city to keep a track of their oxygen levels.
