Ayodhya Ram Temple: Giant Billboards In 10 US States, Special Break For Hindu Officials In Mauritius

The consecration of Ayodhya Ram Temple is a matter of celebration not just for the Hindus in India but also for the diaspora spread across the globe.

As January 22, the day of the Pran Pratishtha draws closer, they are also marking the occasion in unique ways.

40 billboards in 10 states

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), US chapter, in association with Hindus from across the US, has put up more than 40 billboards in 10 states and more, displaying the message around the grand 'Pran Pratishtha' ceremony.

The billboards have gone up in Texas, Illinois, New York, New Jersey, and Georgia, among other states. Additionally, Arizona and the State of Missouri are set to join this visual celebration starting Monday, January 15, according to the VHP, American chapter.

Car rallies by American Hindus

To commemorate the inauguration of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, the Hindu American community across the US has organised several car rallies and has planned many more events in the run-up to the 'Pran Pratishtha' in Ayodhya.

Two-hour leave for Hindus in Mauritius

Meanwhile, the government of Mauritius, the only country in Africa where Hinduism is the most practised religion, has decided to grant a one-off special leave for two hours to public servants of the Hindu faith to attend prayers marking the inauguration of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya on January 22.

"Cabinet has agreed to the grant of a one-off special leave of two hours on Monday 22 January 2024 from 1400 hours to public officers of Hindu faith, subject to exigencies of service, in the context of the inauguration of the Ayodhya Ram Mandir in India, which is a landmark event as it symbolises the return of Lord Ram in Ayodhya," the Mauritian Cabinet led by Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth said in a statement on Friday.

Hinduism in Mauritius

Hinduism is the largest religion in Mauritius, with Hindus representing approximately 48.5 per cent of the population in 2011.

Mauritius ranks third globally in the prevalence of Hinduism, following Nepal and India.

Hinduism came to Mauritius when Indians were brought as indentured labour to colonial French and later in much larger numbers to British plantations in Mauritius and neighbouring islands of the Indian Ocean.

The migrants came primarily from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
