Bank Official Steals Coins Worth Rs 84 Lakhs From His Branch To Buy Lottery Tickets
Senior assistant manager of the State Bank of India SBI Memari branch in East Burdwan district of West Bengal has been arrested for stealing Rs 84 lakhs and that too in coins to buy a lottery ticket. Tarak Jaiswal 35 had a habit of gambling and it made him take advantage of his position as a custodian of the currency chest and he stole the money in 17 months.
In a bizarre incident, a senior assistant manager of the State Bank of India (SBI) Memari branch in East Burdwan district of West Bengal has been arrested for stealing Rs 84 lakhs and that too in coins to buy a lottery ticket.
According to HT, Tarak Jaiswal (35) had a habit of gambling and it made him take advantage of his position as a custodian of the currency chest and he stole the said money in 17 months.
He stole coins, so if we consider he took away Rs 10 coin which is the highest denominator in currency operational in coins, he stole 8,40, 000 coins in 17 months which brings the number to 50, 000 coins a month and roughly 2000 coins a day.
Jaiswal was arrested after the annual audit at the branch. The auditors found a massive mismatch in the coin stock. They asked the officials to count the coins on November 29. Since Jaiswal was the in-charge of handling cash at the end of each working day apart from being the key person dealing with currency chest, he was ought to get suspected.
Jaiswal sensed his theft being caught and therefore he stopped coming to office without even applying for leave which added to the suspicion. When the auditors asked for his presence, he sent his wife with keys of the chest instead of coming himself and there the suspicion turned into certainty.
The regional manager Tarun Kumar Saha lodged a complaint against Jaiswal after he found a huge mismatch in numbers of coins. Police arrested Jaiswal and after few hours of grilling, he confessed to his crime. On Saturday he was sent to five days police custody by a local court.
