Gifts On GPay, Food To Be Sent Via Zomato: Couple's Wedding On Google Meet Is Winning Hearts
Guests will be able to use the video conferencing platform to view a live telecast of the wedding while tucking into dinner sent to them via Zomato, all in the comfort of their own homes.
The Covid pandemic introduced us to the idea of virtual weddings and the year 2020-21 taught us that it's possible.
Owing to a global surge in Covid cases, a West Bengal couple is all set to host their wedding of 450 guests without flouting any guidelines. What's more, the food will reach the guests via Zomato.
When Sandipan Sarkar and Aditi Das get married on January 24, guests will use Google Meet to 'attend' the ceremony. Even though the West Bengal government has allowed 200 guests at weddings, the Burdwan couple's decision to stand apart is winning hearts.
"We had been planning to get married for the past year, but the pandemic became a problem," Sarkar said. Guests will be able to use the video conferencing platform to view a live telecast of the wedding while tucking into dinner sent to them via Zomato, all in the comfort of their own homes.
How did they get the idea?
The 28-year-old said that the idea of hosting a digital wedding came to him after he was hospitalised for four days following Covid-19 complications. "I had Covid between 4 and 14 January and was hospitalised. I didn¡¯t want such a situation for other guests coming from outside Burdwan, who would attend the wedding, ¡° said Sandipan Sarkar.
"Sandipan suggested this and we thought people would laugh but decided that we should be the first to set the trend. Our families were informed, who initially wondered why we should do this. But we are happy that we are able to do this during the pandemic to be able to celebrate with everyone, ¡° said Aditi Das.
How will this work?
Only about 100 to 120 guests will attend the wedding physically, while more than 300 people will watch the live telecast. All invitees will receive a link to watch the wedding along with passwords one day before the ceremony.
A Zomato official, speaking to Telegraph India, said that the company lauded the move. "It was a very new idea for us. I talked to seniors in the company, who welcomed it. We have already prepared a team to monitor this wedding's deliveries. We laud such a move in the pandemic. We are planning to promote this event officially," he said.
What about the food, gifts
The wedding food is elaborate with starters and the main course includes pabda fish, mutton, chicken, naan, pulao and rice. There are four desserts on the platter too which include two types of unique rosogollas for the couple who are both football fans of opposing clubs in West Bengal. To top it all off, there is paan too.
Gifts are welcome for the couple via online shopping apps like Flipkart while money can be sent through digital payment platforms like GPay.
The coronavirus pandemic has forced many couples to rethink traditional weddings. One couple from Tamil Nadu, for example, is all set to host their wedding reception in Metaverse. Dinesh S P and Janaganandhini Ramaswamy will allow their guests to choose a digital avatar to enter their virtual reception in February.
