London, the most traffic-congested city
London was the most congested city in the world, where people take 36 minutes and 20 seconds to go 10 kilometres.
The 12th edition of the annual report by TomTom looked into traffic trends across 389 cities in 56 countries throughout 2022.
It found that Bengaluru's city centre was the second slowest in the world and that the traffic congestion in the Karnataka capital increased by 40 seconds in 2022 compared to 2021.

How much time Bengaluru residents spent in traffic
Bengaluru was the 10th most congested city in 2021 and was sixth in 2020.
The city centre's average speed during rush hour was 18kmph against 14kmph in 2021.
The study also found that Bengaluru ranks fourth in the number of hours lost, 129 hours, due to rush-hour traffic.
October 15 was the most traffic-congested day for Bengaluru in 2022, when it took 33 minutes and 50 seconds to cover a distance of 10 km.

Bengalureans spent 260 hours (10 days) in driving and 134 hours due to congestion.
The traffic in Bengaluru has also resulted in 1009kg of CO2 emissions in 2022, out of which 275kg was due to congestion.
Traffic congestion in Pune, Delhi and Mumbai
Pune was the second-most congested city in India, with a global ranking of 6 in the index.
According to TomTom, it took 27 minutes and 20 seconds to cover a distance of 10 km in Pune in 2022, which is 1 minute and 10 seconds more than in 2021.
Delhi and Mumbai were also among the top 50 in 2022.

In Delhi, ranked 34th globally, it took 22 minutes and 10 seconds to travel a distance of 10km in 2022.
The time it took to cover 10km in Mumbai, the 47th-ranked city, was 21 minutes and 10 seconds.
Return to office increased congestion
The study noted that workers have increasingly been heading back to the office, with travel times rising across 62% of the cities (242 out of 389).
With inflation spiking around the globe and the ongoing climate crisis, TomTom looked at the economic and environmental impact of the return to higher traffic levels. Interestingly, despite the rising driving costs globally, it continues to be a major mode of transport in most cities.
