One of the dadis was Bilkis. She became a prominent face of the protest for her resistance despite her age. She was among the women who walked everyday from their homes to the site and protested all day till the night at Shaheen Bagh.
The protests emerged as a strong show of resistance with peaceful demonstrations even as cold waves swept the national capital.
Dabang dadis
A trio of elderly women, now famously known as the ¡°Dabang Dadis¡± of Shaheen Bagh, stayed put at the protest venue which has come up on the Sarita Vihar-Kalindi Kunj road in South East Delhi since December 15.
"With prayer beads in one hand and tricolor in the other, Bilkis became the voice of the marginalized in India, an 82-year-old who would sit at a protest site from 8 a.m. to midnight," said the TIME piece by journalist Rana Ayyub.
"Bilkis gave hope and strength to activists & student leaders who were being thrown behind bars for standing up for unpopular truth in a democracy that was sliding into authoritarianism," the article read.
