The Budget Session of Parliament will commence on Friday, with President Droupadi Murmu addressing the joint sitting of the two Houses at around 11 am. Ahead of the Union Budget 2025, which will be presented on February 1, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will table the Economic Survey 2024-25 on Friday.
What is Economic Survey and who prepares it
The Economic Survey will be tabled in Lok Sabha at 12 noon and at 2 pm in Rajya Sabha. The Economic Survey is an analysis report of India's growth prepared by the Economic Division of the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA).
The Economic Survey is formulated under the supervision of the Chief Economic Adviser and provides insights into the state of the economy and various indicators for 2024-25 (April-March), along with some outlook for the next fiscal year.
Two parts of Economic Survey
The Economic Survey is divided into two parts - Part A and Part B.
Part A focuses on the nation¡¯s macroeconomic performance, reviewing fiscal trends and key economic indicators, including agriculture, industrial production, infrastructure, employment, trade, and inflation.
Part B examines socio-economic challenges such as poverty, education, healthcare, and climate change, while offering projections on GDP growth, inflation, and foreign trade.
Theme of Economic Survey
The theme of the Economic Survey also holds significance. In 2024, the theme was economic resilience. The theme sets the tone for the policies proposed in the Union Budget as well.
The Finance Ministry uses the Economic Survey to set targets for revenue and expenditure, address urgent issues like unemployment and inflation, and prioritise sectors that need immediate attention.
Budget Session of Parliament
The Budget Session of Parliament will start on Friday, January 31, and conclude on April 4. Parliament will have an inter-session break from February 14 and will resume on March 10.
The Union Budget will be presented on February 1 by Finance Minister Sitharaman, who will present her eighth consecutive Union Budget.
