Stole serpent statue from garbhagriha
The theft of a 'serpent' statue from a Meerut temple in Uttar Pradesh was caught on CCTV. The video begins with the man entering the inner sanctum of the temple, which is called the garbhagriha.
He begins by seeking blessings from the idols inside, respectfully touching their feet.
Afterward, he briefly steps outside to check if anyone else is present in the temple. Then, he kneels down and opens the bag he brought with him.

Carefully, he takes out a serpent statue from its place and puts it into his bag.
After the video caught the attention of the police, they stepped in to reassure the public that appropriate legal action will be taken against the individual responsible.

Temple thefts not uncommon
Earlier this month, a silver ornament was taken from a temple in Samrala, Punjab. During a crowded aarti ceremony, a man snatched the silver chain attached to a bell.
In May 2023, a man stole headgear, earrings, bracelets, and a flute from a temple near Bhubaneswar.

Nine years later, during another aarti ceremony, he returned all the stolen items.
Despite a police report, no progress was made in the case. However, the man returned everything along with a note explaining that he had faced many challenges over the nine years and felt compelled to return the items.
It seems that guilt eventually catches up with thieves, especially when the theft is committed in a place considered to be God's abode.
