Cop In Mangaluru Selflessly Helps A Woman To Deliver Baby In His Car

At times when some people abhor or fear the khaki, persons such as Ravi Kumar, who don it with pride, still stand for the purity that the colour of the uniform symbolises.

This manifested itself when Ravi, a head constable at Mangaluru Rural police station came to rescue of a woman in labour, transcending religious boundaries.

Ravi's selfless effort to help the woman, also stood out as a beacon of hope for a district that off late is troubled by lack of communal amity at most times.

Ravi Kumar, about to drop his children to school in Yekkuru, ran in to a distraught mother and her son, who approached him for help.

Naushad, an auto driver, told TOI that his sister Balkesh was undergoing severe labour pains. They had travelled almost eight kilometres in his auto rickshaw from Ullal towards a private hospital in Kankanady. During the journey, Balkesh almost delivered the baby.

¡°The baby had partially come out. There were three women in the auto ¨C my mother, elder sister and Balkesh. She was bleeding.

We did not know what to do as a part of the baby was already out. We saw a car nearby and rushed towards it seeking help. Ravi Kumar did not think twice before helping. Balkesh ended up delivering in his car,¡± Naushad said.

¡°I would not have qualified as a human being had I not helped. I just happened to be there at that time. I quickly walked my children across the road so I could take the woman to hospital.

Even while I was walking them, my kids told me to take care of the woman in pain. I drove as fast as I could so that we reached the hospital on time. However, she delivered in the car,¡± Kumar said.

Once they reached the hospital, the staff cut the umbilical cord and administered required treatment to the mother and the baby. Balkesh¡¯s family confirmed to TOI that she delivered a boy and both the mother and the newborn are safe.
