Omicron: India Reports 406 Deaths In The Past 24 Hours, 22,775 New Covid Cases

Day after New Year's eve, India has reported a total of 22,775 new cases of Covid-19 and 406 deaths in the last 24 hours. Among the new cases, 1,431 are of the new variant of COVID-19 Omicron, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said on Saturday.

As per the data released by the govt, 8,949 more persons recovered from the disease in the last 24 hours, and the active caseload stands at 1,04,781. While the total recoveries are 3,42,75,312, the total death toll has reached 4,81,486. According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 67,89,89,110 samples have been tested up to December 31 for COVID-19. Of these 11,10,855 samples were tested on Friday.

Vaccine, active cases and total tally

The cumulative number of Covid-19 vaccine doses administered so far in the country stands at 1,45,16,24,150, with 58,11,487 doses administered in the last 24 hours.

The daily rise in COVID-19 cases crossed the 16,000-mark in the country after around 65 days, taking the infection tally to 3,48,61,579, while the count of active cases increased to 1,04,781, according to the data updated at 8 am.

The active cases comprised 0.30 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate was recorded at 98.32 per cent, the health ministry said.

Omicron cases in top 5 states

Statewise, Maharashtra has reported 454 cases of Omicron variant so far, followed by Delhi, that has reported 351, Tamil Nadu reported 118 fresh infections of the new variant, 115 cases in Gujarat and 109 in Kerala.

This comes a day after Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain hinted at community transmission. According to Jain, 46% of the total 115 Covid samples are of Omicron variant. ¡°People with no travel history found infected with Omicron, it means it's gradually spreading in community," Jain said. Jain said, there are 200 Covid cases in Delhi hospitals at present. Of them 102 belongs to city, 98 are from outside, he said.

Of these 200 Covid-19 cases, 115 are asymptomatic and have been kept in hospitals as precautionary step, Jain added.

Registration of vaccine for kids begin

Meanwhile, registration for vaccination against COVID-19 for teens between the ages of 15 and 18 is beginning today on the COWIN portal, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said.

Taking to Twitter, the Health Minister requested people to register eligible teens in their families for this.

"On the occasion of New Year, registration is being started on COWIN portal for immunization of children against #COVID19 in the age group of 15 to 18 years from today. I request the family members to register the eligible children for vaccination. #SabkoVaccineMuftVaccine,"Mandaviya tweeted in Hindi.

Covid vaccination for children in the 15-18 age group will start from January 3.
