Tragic! 9YO Delhi Boy Dies After Being Trapped Between Lift Doors For Nearly Half An Hour
On the fateful Friday morning, Ashish followed his mother, Rekha, when she was out to gather clothes from houses in the building. While Rekha chose to take the stairs to reach the homes, Ashish decided to take the elevator and got stuck.
In a tragic mishap, a 9-year-old boy died after getting trapped between the elevator and the shaft of a four-storey residential building in west Delhi's Vikaspuri.
Officials aware of the incident told the media that the incident occurred on March 24. The victim, identified as Ashish (9), lived with his family in the Sitapuri area, and his parents work as laundrymen.
What happened?
On the fateful Friday morning, Ashish followed his mother, Rekha, when she was out to gather clothes from houses in the building. While Rekha chose to take the stairs to reach the homes, Ashish decided to take the elevator and got stuck.
Ashish's father, Ramesh, told HT that his wife returned to the shop after collecting clothes and inquired about their son's whereabouts. Ramesh told her wife that the boy had followed her, and they immediately went to the building and looked for him.
Eventually, they spotted the boy's legs dangling after peeping inside the lift from a small glass panel in the lift's wooden safety door. Upon this, they raised the alarm and informed the families living on the upper floors.
Prime facie evaluation suggests technical error
Deputy commissioner of police (west) Ghanshyam Bansal, based on prime facie evaluation, pointed out that the elevator may have malfunctioned due to a technical snag.
He believes the lift might have started moving upward while the boy was getting on it and was left stuck between the elevator and the shaft as the collapsible gate closed.
The boy reportedly remained in that state for almost half an hour while the local residents and later a professional from the private company responsible for elevator maintenance conducted rescue efforts.
After the boy was pulled out of the shaft, he was taken to the hospital, where the doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
FIR registered against unknown individuals
According to the first information report (FIR), the police were notified at around 12.30 pm about the boy's death. A police team reached the hospital and received the boy's medico-legal certificate, which stated that he had suffered "crush injury in a lift".
A case of negligent conduct with respect to machinery and death by negligence was registered against unknown persons under sections 287 and 304A of the Indian Penal Code at the Vikaspuri police station.
