The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to return to power in the national capital, New Delhi, after nearly three decades, unseating the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). The BJP, which won just eight seats in the 2020 Delhi Assembly elections, is leading in over 45 constituencies.

AAP had won 62 out of the total 70 seats in 2020 and 67 in 2015.
Polling for the 70-member assembly was held on February 5, with a total voter turnout recorded at 60.54 per cent.

The party then had a long hiatus from power starting in December 1998, when the Congress, led by Sheila Dikshit, won the assembly elections.
Sheila Dikshit led Delhi for 15 years until 2013, when she was ousted by Arvind Kejriwal and AAP.
In December 2013, despite the BJP winning the most seats (31), AAP, which was the second-largest party with 28 seats, formed a minority government.

The short-lived government collapsed after just 49 days, but AAP returned to power in January 2015, winning a record 67 of the 70 seats.
Congress, which has been out of power in Delhi since 2013, had nothing to celebrate in 2025 as well, as the party once again failed to win even a single seat in the assembly election.
