Officially Banned Since 2017, Chinese Manjha Slits Delhi Man's Throat While Riding A Bike To Home

In a shocking incident, a 30-year-old man was killed in Delhi after his throat was slit by Chinese Manjha while travelling on a bike.

The incident happened on Haiderpur flyover Monday, when the victim, identified as Sumit Kumar, a resident of Rohini, was heading home.

Chinese Manjha slit his throat

Deputy Commissioner of Police (northwest) Usha Rangnani said a call was received at Maurya Enclave police station regarding a person who got injured with a string at Haiderpur Flyover. "The injured man was rushed to the Saroj Hospital where the doctor declared him 'brought dead,'" the DCP said.

During the inquiry, the deceased's father stated that his son Sumit was coming home from Burari on his motorcycle, and when he reached Haiderpur Flyover, a sharp string slit his throat.

The police said they have registered a case under section 304A (death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code and an investigation of the case is in progress.

Chinese Manjha, which is a glass-coated kite string has been blamed for several deaths and serious injuries on those travelling on two-wheelers in the past as well.

The broken strings that are discarded by kite-flyers are also known to kill or seriously injure a large number of birds.

NGT banned Chinese Manjha in 2017

In 2017 the National Green Tribunal (NGT) imposed a complete ban on the production, storage, and sale of Chinese manjha as it not only poses a threat to birds and humans but also causes harm to the environment.

The NGT had said the ban would apply to nylon, Chinese and cotton manjha coated with glass and had directed the Manja Association of India to submit a report to CPCB on its harmful effects.

Ban, only on paper

Despite the ban, it is still available in markets across the country.

At least four deaths were reported in Delhi from Chinese manjha in 2021.

The number of incidents involving Chinese manjha is the highest in August when kite flying happens the most.

Thousands of birds get killed

It is not just humans that are getting injured from the broken strings that are left behind.

Thousands of birds are also killed or have their wings and legs cut off after getting entangled in Chinese manjha.

In 2021, immediately after Independence Day, the Jain Bird Hospital in Chandni Chowk was getting 100-150 birds every day with injuries from Chinese manjha.

Wildlife Rescue, another bird hospital that specialises in raptors, also reported an increase in the number of injured birds they receive during the same period.
