Alag Natarajan got the nickname ¡®Matka Man¡¯ from his daughter on one of his birthdays and he is a good samaritan. Hailing from Panscheel Park, he wakes up at five in the morning daily to fill 70-80 matkas in different parts of South Delhi, as per The New Indian Express.
In peak summer months, he fills in around 100.
Natarajan is a cancer survivor and other than water, he also feeds a special, healthy salad to around 400 people on a weekly basis.
At 72, he is a force to reckon with.
¡°It has taken a lot of time for people to accept my matkas. In the beginning, they thought it was the Aam Aadmi Party¡¯s campaign. Later, they said I was looking to become an MLA or a councilor,¡± he said.
This is Natarajan's way of giving back to society.
¡°Social work always creates conflict, even if you look back at history. Going back to Mahatma Gandhi; even he had to go through a lot of personal difficulties in what he did,¡± he added.
Even during the pandemic, he was doing his duty.
He is always willing to address a complaint. Natarajan recalls how once a young boy rang him up.
¡°He told me, ¡®You have hammered a nail into the bark of a tree to place a placard with your mobile number. That tree is in pain¡¯,¡± he went on to say.
¡°Can you imagine the world with sensitive, young kids like that¡ªit will be a much better world to live in," he continued.
He removed the nail from the tree.
Natarajan is on a mission to help those in need, one matka at a time.
