Amid faltering medical infrastructure thousands of COVID and non-COVID patients are also denied dignity in death, a basic human right.
In one such incident, a woman's body in Uttar Pradesh was taken for cremation in a municipal garbage van.
Her brother, Prabhas Sarkar told NDTV that 65-year-old Balamati had been unwell for months in her home in West Bengal.
"The doctors said she had a brain haemorrhage," he said.
With no one to take care of her, Prabhas brought her to Shamli district late last month. But he could not save her and she died on Saturday evening.
After trying to find more people to help carry her body for hours, Prabhas dialled the municipal corporation.

Even though the death did not happen due to COVID, neighbours were quite skeptical.
At last, the municipality sent a garbage van to ferry the body for cremation. A photo clicked by a witness of the incident has been widely shared on social media and messaging platforms.
Jasjit Kaur, the District Magistrate of Shamli, said she had ordered an investigation into the incident.
