'Fear Of Failure' Pushes IIT Hyderabad Student To Suicide, The Third Case In The Campus This Year

Making it to one of the IITs, graduating from there and getting placed in a top global tech company is still one of the biggest dreams of millions of aspiring Indians.
It is like a rat race for young minds, which is often fueled by peer and family pressure to succeed.
But not everyone who dreams about it can make it successfully. And this can have serious consequences including driving them to depression and even suicide.

In yet another such tragic incident, a 20-year-old student of IIT-Hyderabad committed suicide by jumping from the hostel building on the campus.
Siddharth Pichikala, a third-year student of computer science, jumped off the third floor of the hostel building in the afternoon. He was taken to a private hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Siddharth, a resident of Hyderabad, had reportedly sent an email to his friends before committing suicide. He is said to have stated that he lags in studies and is afraid of failure in making a career.
"Life rather seems depressing. Never-ending strands of misfortune to an extent that I mentally couldn¡¯t tolerate it. I have no clue how my future is going to be. I have been feeling this for the past two months," read the suicide note.
According to his relatives, Siddharth was an introvert who was only focused on his studies and did not have many friends including on the campus.

This is the third suicide at the institute this year. In July, 20-year-old Mark Andrew Charles, a second-year master's student from Uttar Pradesh, had committed suicide by hanging in his hostel room. He wrote in his suicide note that he may not get good marks and that there is no future for failures in the world.
In February, a third-year student, Anirudhya Mummaneni had ended life by jumping off the hostel building.
It is not the IIT-H that has been plagued with an increasing number of student deaths. This year alone there has been more than a dozen cases of student suicides across various IITs.
Despite this, many say that there is no proper system in place in the country's top tech schools to deal with students facing stress and depression, which then drives them to suicide.
