While 'Vigilantes' Are Busy In The Streets, Dozens Of Cows Found Dead In Bhopal Shelter
Dozens of cows were reportedly found dead in a shelter allegedly run by a Bharatiya Janata Party worker on Sunday. Locals and cow vigilantes protested demanding action against Nirmala Shandilya director of the facility. Some locals also alleged that the cowshed manager is involved in the business of illegal trading of dead cows.
The death of several cows in a cowshed in the Berasia area of Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh, has triggered protests from locals and cow protection groups.
Dozens of cows were reportedly found dead in a shelter allegedly run by a Bharatiya Janata Party worker on Sunday.
"A large number of cows were found dead in a cowshed in Berasia near Bhopal, following which investigation is being done by the police. The cowshed is managed by Nirmala Shandilya," said Vikas Mishra, Chief Executive officer (CEO), Zila Parishad.
"Health check-up of all cows being done by district authority," Mishra added.
The authorities have launched an investigation after locals and cow vigilantes protested on Sunday demanding action against Nirmala, director of the facility.
On Sunday district collector Avinash Lavania had to reach the spot to pacify the locals who were protesting demanding action against her.
Some locals also alleged that the cowshed manager is involved in the business of illegal trading of dead cows.
"This has been going on for a while now, the owner of this place either kill cows or let them die and then sell their flesh and bones in the market," said Radhe Shyam Kushwaha, neighbour.
Congress's Rajya Sabha MP Digvijaya Singh alleged that for many years, the trade of cow bones and leather was going on in the cowshed run by Nirmala Shandilya.

Digvijaya Singh said over 500 cows were found dead in the cowshed and sought a case of cow slaughter against its directors.
"It should be investigated if the woman BJP leader was involved in the business of leather and bones. The grant received by this cowshed should also be probed," Digvijaya Singh said.
Denying any wrongdoing Nirmala Shandilya said, "Dead corpse of cows lying around does not only belong to my shelter house. Some of the cows that belonged to my shelter died because they were very weak and it was cold."
The incident in Bhopal once again shows the poor state of cows in a country, where it is worshiped by the majority of the population.
Last week 15 cows had died in a cow shelter in Siddhavan Gaushala of Jabalpur, allegedly due to starvation. It was alleged that the Sarpanch of the village had siphoned off the money received for the operation of the Gaushala, resulting in the cows starving to death.
It is not a problem that is limited to Madhya Pradesh.
Last week some 28 cows had died at a Gau Sadan, run and maintained by the Manali civic body in Himachal Pradesh.
According to reports, the facility used to house over 200 stray cows and the deaths were caused by extreme cold.
The stray cow population has exploded in many states in recent years, due to strict cattle slaughter bans.
Unable to sell their unproductive cattle to slaughterhouses farmers have been dumping them on the streets.
Many of these end up in cow shelters which are already struggling to feed their existing population.
