Drunk Man Pees On Woman In Business Class Of NY-Delhi Air India Flight, Walks Off Unpunished

A horrific development that occurred on November 26 on Air India Flight AI-102 from New York to Delhi has come to light. During the journey, an intoxicated man exposed himself and urinated on a female passenger in a business class section of the flight.

The woman's plight did not stop there. Even after the cabin crew was alerted, the disorderly traveller was not apprehended, and he walked off scot-free after the flight landed in Delhi, reported TOI.

Probe launched by DGCA

Meanwhile, India's aviation regulator has launched a probe into the matter.

"We are seeking a report from the Airline and shall take action against those found negligent," said the Directorate General of Civil Aviation in a statement today.

'Crew was not proactive'

In her letter, the woman in her 70s stated that the airline made no effort to make her feel safe and comfortable.

"The crew was not proactive in managing a very sensitive and traumatic situation, and I had to advocate for myself throughout, waiting for long periods of time to get a response. I am ...distressed that the airline made no attempt to ensure my safety or comfort during this incident," the letter read.

Series of events

On November 26 last year, the drunk passenger allegedly unzipped and urinated on a co-passenger in her 70s in the business class section of the flight cabin.

People on the flight were unaware of the development as the lights were dimmed after lunch. After urinating, the man purportedly didn't move until another passenger asked him to leave.

Following the horrific act, the woman complained to the crew and informed them that her clothes, shoes and bag were soaked in urine. Upon this, the staff provided her with clothes and slippers and told her to return to her seat.

The woman alleged that though there were several vacant seats in the first class, the Air India staff initially asked her to go to her original seat, which was "reeking of urine".

The crew sprayed disinfectant on the seat. When she firmly refused to take the same seat, she was given another crew seat two hours later, where she spent the rest of her flight.

To the woman's shock, the passenger allegedly left without facing any action after the flight landed in Delhi.

Not much respite for woman at airport

The woman was promised she would get a wheelchair on arrival to ensure that she cleared customs as early as possible. This move by the airline didn't provide much respite to the woman.

The wheelchair deposited her at a waiting area, where she had to wait for 30 minutes before she could collect her luggage. The woman said that she had to clear customs on her own, that too in Air India pyjamas and socks.

The airline pursued the incident only after the woman wrote to Tata Group chairman N Chandrasekaran. Meanwhile, Air India has reported the incident to police and regulatory authorities.

"We have been in regular contact with the aggrieved passenger," the airline said in a statement. "Air India constituted an internal committee in this incident and recommended to put the male passenger on 'no-fly list', the matter is under government committee and decision is awaited," the airline said in a statement today.
