Fatal Bacteria Like E Coli, Found In Excreta, Has Contaminated Ganga To A Dangerous Level
Ganga&rsquos faecal coliform bacteria level is found to be 3 to 12 times higher than the permissible limit at most interstate boundaries. The permissible limit for FC is 2500 MPN most probable number /100 ml while the desirable level is 500 MPN/100 ml at Khagra in Berhampore in West Bengal.
Ganga¡¯s faecal coliform bacteria level is found to be 3 to 12 times higher than the permissible limit at most interstate boundaries, per the data released by Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the top pollution regulator.
Faecal coliform (FC) bacteria, such as E coli, are found in excreta that contaminates through untreated sewage. A high level of faecal coliform means greater chances of contaminating diseases.

The permissible limit for FC is 2,500 MPN (most probable number) /100 ml, while the desirable level is 500 MPN/100 ml.
At Khagra in Berhampore in West Bengal, faecal coliform (FC) in Ganges was at its highest level, recorded at 30,000 MPN/ml which is 12 times the permissible limit and 60 times than the desired limit.
The CPCB has released data of the river at nine inter-state boundaries passing through states of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and Jharkhand.

It was only in Bijnor and Uttar Pradesh and Sultanpur in Uttarakhand that the faecal coliform was recorded within the permissible level.
