Four Years After The Tragic Badaun Case, Two Minor Girls Found Hanging From Tree In UP

In a virtual rerun of 2014 Badaun case, two sisters were found hanging from a tree in Dhumana Deeppur village under Gunnaur police station jurisdiction on Sambhal on Sunday. Police said though the family of the victims claimed that they hanged themselves after being scolded for not doing domestic chores, the honour killing angle was also being probed.

The family¡¯s neighbours claimed that the girls were upset as the family had fixed their marriage without their consent. The police confirmed that the two sisters ¡ª Kavita Yadav (19) and Seema Yadav (18) were to get married in March next. In May 2014, two minor girls were found hanging in Badaun district after which a CBI probe had been ordered. It was believed that the girls had been raped and hanged but the CBI report said that they had committed suicide.

Sambhal SP Yamuna Prasad said police were probing all angles. ¡°Two things in this incident make the family suspicious,¡± he told TOI.

¡®Unlikely that girls were able to climb the tree¡¯

¡°First, their claim that the girls took the extreme step after being scolded is not convincing enough. Second, it is highly unlikely that the girls were able to climb the tree, which is so tall that it would be difficult for a normal person to reach its lowest branch.¡±

¡°We have also come to know about different versions from neighbours but cannot jump to any conclusion without substantial evidence. By tomorrow (Monday), the post-mortem report will arrive. Only after that will we be able to say anything with certainty. We are probing the matter from all angles.¡±

Gunnaur circle officer Gamleshwar Viltoria confirmed to TOI that their marriages had been fixed, ¡°We learnt that the girls¡¯ marriage was to be solemnised in March with two men of the same village. A crime team has collected crucial evidence, including fingerprints, from the crime scene. A surveillance team is examining the call details of the victims¡¯ mobile phones.¡±

Police said both girls did not go to school and would help the family with domestic work and farming. Their father, Ramveer Singh Yadav, is a marginal farmer with only two bighas of land. Gunnaur SHO Ata Mohammad told TOI that the girl¡¯s father has said in the complaint registered with them that when he was woken up at around 5 am, he found both his daughters hanging from a tree outside his house.

¡°The girls¡¯ family told us that they had gone out to attend a funeral. When they came back on Saturday evening, they found the girls had not given fodder to the cattle. Taking this to be carelessness, they scolded them,¡± the SHO said.
