Manikandan hails from a home called Nalmanam in Villivakkam, Tamil Nadu. He was there since he was 10, a few years after his father died. He was a daily wage labourer. Manikandan studied at a private school and his mom would visit him.
¡°One day when Manikandan was in Class 7, his mother visited the home and asked for her son. Since he was in school, she visited him there. She voluntarily washed the clothes of all the children in the home, cleaned the whole building, and helped cook. Later that day, she went home and immolated herself,¡± said Paribhaskar, who runs the home.
It was a big blow to a boy who was just 12, but he recalls he had people to support him.
"But my mentors and friends at the home were there for me. Paribhaskar soon found me a doctor who funded my education through college,¡± he said.
He had a passion for crime thrillers and always wanted to join the police. The young man did his Bachelors in Criminology.
"I¡¯ve seen several youngsters who lost their way at a very young age, and am grateful to have been brought up in a home. If not, I don¡¯t know what would have become of me once my parents died,¡± he added.
He was shortlisted for those wanting to join the Armed Reserve Forces in 2017. Right now he is posted at the Ambattur Industrial Estate police station.
Manikandan's journey has just begun, it will be interesting to see how it ends.
