Just when you thought you had Gen Z all figured out and they'd done everything imaginable, they've thrown a new term into the mix: 'NEET.' Wondering what this latest buzz is? Let's dive down the rabbit hole.
Gen Z 每 colloquially known as 'zoomers' are born between 1996 and 2010.
NEET stands for "not in employment, education, or training," and this lifestyle trend is linked to rising levels of youth unemployment worldwide.
In 2023, the International Labour Organization (ILO) reported that around one-fifth of individuals aged 15 to 24 fell into the NEET category.
A significant portion of India's unemployed population comprises young people, with over 80% falling under this category, according to a report by the International Labour Organization.
The reasons behind why a sizable cohort of Gen Z is opting out of the workforce are not entirely clear. However, research suggests they are struggling to achieve traditional milestones, facing lower earnings and higher debt burdens.
While some Gen Z desire to work, they aren't keen on pursuing a full-blown career. A 2023 study revealed that 40% of those surveyed prefer non-traditional economic opportunities.
These include jobs with relaxed environments, no regular overtime, or significant responsibilities. Many are also distancing themselves from traditional office culture. Interestingly, teaching has emerged as a popular choice among motivated Gen Z graduates, offering a balance with low pay but ample vacation time.
However, Gen Z in India has a different perspective. According to a Forbes report from December last year, unlike their global counterparts, Indian Gen Zs are deeply focused on their career aspirations.
43% of them are optimistic that 2024 will be a year of self-improvement, dedicated to personal growth and development.
Compared to their peers in other countries, Indian Gen Z also strongly believe that entrepreneurship is the pathway to wealth creation.
So, there remains a hopeful outlook that Gen Z in India will steer the nation toward brighter horizons!
