India has long struggled with a garbage issue. But, it recently hit a low on the global stage when Denmark's top diplomat shared a video of a garbage dump outside the embassy building on social media, calling New Delhi "great, green, and trashy."
Saddened by it, says Denmark's ambassador to India
Denmark's ambassador to India, H.E. Freddy Svane, shared a video on social media showcasing a service road strewn with garbage.
The road lies between the Danish and Greek embassies in New Delhi.
The video, posted on X (formerly Twitter), was captioned: "Lovely and green New Delhi. Many words but no action. Saddened by this," and tagged Denmark in India, the Chief Minister's Office in Delhi, and the Lieutenant Governor's Office in Delhi.
Svane appeared in the video amidst the trash-laden road, referring to New Delhi as "great, green, and trashy."
The Danish diplomat urged for action, expressing hope that the video would prompt someone to take notice.
Concluding the video with a "dhanyawad" (Thank you) in Hindi, he emphasised the need for action rather than just words.

The envoy said in the video, "Welcome to the great, green, and trashy New Delhi. Here we have the Danish Embassy, and the Greek Embassy is over there. This should be a service lane, but you can see it¡¯s full of trash, and people are just dumping whatever they like. I hope somebody will listen to this and take action. No more nice words, just action. Dhanyawaad."
NDMC initiates immediate cleanup
The New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) quickly responded to the situation and initiated the cleanup of the area.
In a video shared by news agency ANI, earthmovers and sanitation workers were seen clearing the heaps of garbage from a service road between the Danish and Greek embassies.

ANI also shared a video of Denmark's Ambassador, Svane Freed, expressing pride in the NDMC's prompt action, stating, "I am so proud that NDMC took action within a few minutes...I have lived here for 11 years. We love India¡"
However, as one commenter pointed out, "Why not clean up the entire city?"
This raises a valid question: why did it require the intervention of a diplomat for the NDMC to address the garbage issue? Does the common citizen have no recourse for ensuring the cleanliness of their localities if there is no one to advocate for them?
