It settles for the more general 'meat', ostensibly because the final report of the forensic test of the meat sample recovered from Akhlaq's house has still not been filed. The sample, tested at a forensic lab in Mathura, was found to be mutton, not beef. The findings were shared by government officials with Times of India in October. But on Wednesday, police said the final forensic report was still awaited. Deputy superintendent of police Anurag Singh said, "Akhlaq was killed on rumours of eating and storing beef. The police had picked up samples that were sent for the test. The final report is still awaited and will only be opened in court." The FIR too had made no mention of beef, neither did the UP government's report to the Centre. The family of 58-year-old Akhlaq has all along insisted the meat in their house was mutton.
In the two-page chargesheet filed before a local court on Wednesday, police have named 15 people, among them a suspected juvenile whose age the cops have requested the court to examine. Nineteen people are accused in the case. The chargesheet against the remaining four will be filed later, police said.
Attacker not a juvenile
Yusuf Saifi, counsel for Akhlaq, said, "We had come to know one of the accused is not a juvenile. Police initially produced him (in court) as a juvenile but during proceedings, we came to know he is not a juvenile. We cross-checked with the school where he was studied." Saifi added that the principal of the suspect's school had certified his date of birth at the time of Class 10. "We have shared the details with the court. The investigating officer has also filed an application for revisiting the age of the accused," he said.
A senior police officer said the chargesheet details sequence of events from the time people gathered around a transformer near Akhlaq's house to the attack on him and his son Danish. It names three of the accused ！ Vishal (son of local BJP functionary Sanjay Rana), Shivam and Rupender ！ as the ones who had pressured the priest of a nearby temple to announce on a loudspeaker about Akhlaq having beef.
