Understanding Polio: signs and symptoms
Polio is caused by a virus that mainly affects the nerves in the spine and brain. You can get it from contaminated water or food, or by being around someone who's infected.
Most people with polio don't have symptoms, but some might feel like they have the flu at first, with a fever, headache, and upset stomach.

There are two types of polio: one that can cause paralysis (when you can't move parts of your body), and one that doesn't. Both types start with the same symptoms, but the paralysis kind can lead to muscle weakness, pain, and sometimes paralysis of the arms or legs.
To protect children from polio, the CDC recommends four doses of the vaccine. The first dose should be given when the child is two months old, followed by two more doses at four months, six and eighteen months, and finally, four and six years old.
