Clicking on links forwards WhatsApp messages to scammer
Chetty Arun, who serves as the culture head at Razorpay, recently shared a series of screenshots detailing his encounter with a scammer on X (formerly Twitter).
"It all started with a few annoying WhatsApp messages trying to scam me," Arun posted, adding that he received 4-5 such messages from different numbers that day, all sending an APK file on WhatsApp.
"I got annoyed at first. Blocked all those numbers. But this one particular one, I decided to call and bash him. But then, the weirdo in me wanted to have a chat," he says.
Arun was intrigued to find out what the APK would do once installed. The scammer disclosed that if he clicked on it, it would essentially forward all his messages to their number.
Determined to learn more, Arun probed further, questioning the scammer about their motives and how they profited from their deceitful tactics.
He learned that if the file was downloaded, it would grant the scammer access to all his messages, Arun shared. Additionally, the fraudster confessed to exploiting OTPs sent to the victim's number, using them to sign up for e-commerce websites and ultimately stealing money.
Reflecting on his encounter, Arun offered a piece of advice: Never click on these APK files, and make sure to inform your family members, especially the elderly, about the dangers.
Once the scammer gains access, it becomes effortless for them to target more victims through WhatsApp.
Additionally, if someone inadvertently installs the APK, he advises to reset everything immediately.
