Students Who Vandalised JNU Property Will Pay For Damages: Registrar. When Will They Be Caught?
JNU Vice Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar finally broke his silence and urged the students to put the past behind and return to the varsity premises. On Sunday evening more than 30 students of the university including JNUSU president Aishe Ghosh were injured and were taken to the AIIMS Trauma Centre after a masked mob attacked them and professors with sticks and rods. Police are investigating if the attackers came from inside or outside.
The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Vice Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar, who is under fire from students, faculty members, members of the Opposition and activists, finally broke his silence and urged the students to put the past behind and return to the varsity premises.
"Our heart goes out to all the injured students. The incident (violence) is unfortunate," Kumar said in a brief statement.
"I would like to tell students that JNU campus is a secure place. I urge all students to come back to the campus. Let us put the past behind," the vice chancellor said.
After the attack, there has been a demand from numerous factions demanding his resignation and accusing him of being complicit in the targeted violence against students.
Addressing the media, Jagadesh Kumar said, "JNU is known for debate and mad discussion. What happened on Sunday was painful for all of us. The situation was brought under control after we called the police. Police are investigating if the attackers came from inside or outside and facts will come out."
Meanwhile, JNU Registrar, Pramod Kumar, said that the university will recover cost of the losses caused during vandalism.
JNU Registrar Pramod Kumar, on the other hand, said, "There have been heavy losses on the campus due to the vandalism. Those students who were involved in the vandalism will be identified and losses will be recovered from them."
He added, "University is an open space. We would like to allow free movement on the campus. Let the security personnel investigate the matter. We don't see students as two groups."
On the other hand, JNUSU said in a tweet: "Why has the administration not registered any complaint with Delhi Police regarding the January 5 violence where several students and faculties were attacked by the mob and university property was also damaged?"
The JNU administration lodged a complaint with Delhi Police regarding the vandalism in server room here the registration process was stopped.
While there have been zero arrests made in connection to the attack, the Delhi Police have lodged an FIR against JNUSU president Aishe Ghosh and 19 others.
Former finance minister and senior Congress leader, P Chidambaram today said that Kumar should follow his own advice and leave JNU.
"The VC of JNU wants students to 'put the past behind'. He should follow his advice. He is the past. He should leave JNU," Chidambaram tweeted.
