Allahabad HC judge Shekhar Kumar Yadav under scanner for comments at VHP event has a history of controversies

The Supreme Court has sought a report from the Allahabad High Court regarding comments made by a judge at a Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) event on Sunday. The communally-charged speech by Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav has come under widespread criticism, with many raising questions over his right to continue in the post.
According to the Allahabad High Court's website, Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav is the Administrative Judge for the district of Farrukhabad.
Who is Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav
A law graduate from Allahabad University in 1988, Yadav started practising law in 1990.
He has practised in the Allahabad High Court on the civil and constitutional side and also worked as an Additional Government Advocate and Standing Counsel for the State.
He was made an Additional Judge in December 2019 and elevated to a Permanent Judge in March 2021. Justice Yadav is set to retire in March 2026.
However, this could come early as he could face disciplinary action or even impeachment for these comments on Sunday.
Calls for impeachment of Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav
Lawyers and civil rights groups have written to Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna demanding disciplinary action against Yadav, while Srinagar MP Ruhullah Mehdi said he was moving an impeachment motion in Parliament against him.
Senior advocate and Supreme Court Bar Association president Kapil Sibal also appealed for his impeachment.
Controversial comments in the past
This is not the first time Justice Yadav has made controversial comments.
In the past, as a High Court judge, Justice Yadav has said that the cow should be declared the national animal and cow protection should be kept as a fundamental right of Hindus.
Justice Yadav also once said that Parliament should pass a law respecting/honouring Shri Rama, Shri Krishna, the Gita, Ramayana, Maharishi Valmiki, and Maharishi Ved Vyas as they are part of India's culture and tradition.
He also observed that Hindu religious books like the Gita, Ramayana, etc., must be made part of school courses.
