Dabur Had To Withdraw Karwa Chauth Ad Due To 'Public Intolerance': SC Justice DY Chandrachud
Supreme Court judge D Y Chandrachud said that public intolerance led to the pulling down of the Dabur advertisement that showed a lesbian couple celebrating Karwa Chauth. He was speaking at an event organised by the National Legal Services Authority.
Last week, Dabur was forced to pull down an ad featuring a lesbian couple observing Karwa Chauth.
Supreme Court judge D Y Chandrachud, sharing his thoughts, said that "public intolerance¡± led to the pulling down of the Dabur advertisement that showed a lesbian couple celebrating Karwa Chauth.
He was speaking at an event organised by the National Legal Services Authority on ¡®Empowerment of women through legal awareness¡¯ on October 31.
¡°Just two days ago, all of you would know of the advertisement that a company was required to pull down¡ it was an advertisement for karwa chauth of a same-sex couple¡ it had to be withdrawn on the ground of public intolerance,¡± Justice Chandrachud said.
Talking about the ad, Chandrachud said it is important to ensure legal awareness of the rights of women.
¡°Our Constitution is a transformative document that sought to remedy the structural inequalities rooted in patriarchy. It has become a powerful tool to secure material entitlements and provide public affirmations of dignity and equality of women,¡± Chandrachud said.
The ad was for a fairness bleach which featured two women observing the Karwa Chauth fast. It was met with severe social media backlash, and later Madhya Pradesh Home Minister Narottam Mishra warned of legal action against the firm.
