The Karnataka government wants to introduce Bhagavad Gita as part of the school syllabus. Education Minister BC Nagesh said that a decision will be taken on mandating the teachings of the Hindu religious text to school children under moral science subject. Ever since the Hijab controversy started in the state in January, the Karnataka government had maintained that students do not go to schools or colleges to practice their religion.
In the High Court also the government had taken the same position to oppose Muslim students wearing Hijabs in educational institutions.
But now the same government wants to introduce a Hindu religious text as part of the school syllabus.
According to reports, the education department is preparing to teach the Bhagavad Gita to students under the moral science subject.
Education Minister BC Nagesh on Friday said that a decision will be taken on mandating the teachings of Bhagavad Gita to school children under moral science subject after the consultation of Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai.
Minister Nagesh stated that the demand is growing for the inclusion of moral science into the syllabus of children as it has a good impact. In Gujarat, they are planning to implement it in three phases. In the first phase they have introduced Bhagavad Gita, he said.
"I will discuss with CM Bommai in the coming days for implementation of the moral science subject in the syllabus for school children," he said.
"The moral science classes were held once a week when we studied in school. In the coming days, we will see whether this could be adopted in the state syllabus," he said.
"If everything is agreed upon, we will consult education experts and decide on the aspects and syllabus of the moral science subject. The duration of the class will also be fixed. Why Bhagavad Gita should not be taught to the children?" Minister Nagesh questioned.
"Whether we introduce Bhagavad Gita, the education experts should tell us. They might suggest Bhagavad Gita, Ramayan, moral stories or they might also recommend a few portions of Quran and Bible, he explained.
The development comes a day after Gujarat education minister Jitu Vaghani said that Bhagavad Gita will be introduced as a part of the school syllabus for class 6 to class 12 students from the academic year 2022-23.
"To include Indian culture and knowledge system in school education from the academic year 2022-23, In the first phase, values and principles contained in Bhagavad Gita are being introduced in schools from classes 6-12 as per understanding and interest of children."
"Bhagavad Gita should be introduced in the form of story and recitation in the textbooks in class 6 to 8. In class 9 to 12, Bhagavad Gita should be introduced in the form of story and recitation in the first language textbook," the minister said.
He said that the 700-verse long Hindu scripture should also be included in the prayer program.
