The digital chips will be used to track its health condition and to ensure timely treatment and medication. Animal husbandry minister, Venkatrao Nadagouda informed TOI that the state government had already implanted 56 lakh animals with such electronic chips.
The department¡¯s initiative is in sync with the ¡®Digital India¡¯ project where manual means of nourishing and locating the animals is becoming obsolete. Officials from the animal husbandry department will also visit farmers¡¯ houses to make them aware of this new technique.
Meanwhile, the cattle in Dharwad district of Karnataka are among the worst affected from foot and mouth disease. Nadagouda said that the disease spread during the national cattle display held at Dharwad University of Agricultural Sciences where affected cattle from other states were present.

The state government is also in talks with the Karnataka Milk Federation to increase the sale of indigenous milk production by marketing it under a separate package. Cattle are often misused with the help of a controversial drug called Oxytocin that is popularly called the ¡®love hormone¡¯.
It is considered life saving for humans as it controls excessive bleeding after pregnancy. However, what is life saving for humans is deadly for cattle. The drug is misused on cattle to increase their milk production. This can be fatal for the health of the cattle as well as the humans who consume this milk.
Oxytocin is a listed prescription drug which is used by at least six different government bodies. Oxytocin injections are used on milching buffaloes but it is unethical because it is a painful method for cattle to extract milk for profit.
