Kerala Govt. Announces Budget, Includes Scheme Of Pension For Transgenders Above The Age Of 60
The government has announced a pension scheme for transgenders in the state who are above the age of 60. "The LDF government is committed to protect the rights of all, including those in the transgender community. We will introduce pension for transgenders above 60 years of age." A special educational aid for students from the community have also been announced in the budget.
The Left Democratic Front (LDF) government in Kerala has unveiled its first budget. Among a number of schemes announced by Finance Minister TM Thomas Issac, one stands out.

A special educational aid for students from the community have also been announced in the budget. However the exact amount of pension was not mentioned in the budget speech.
With the announcement Kerala join states like Tamil Nadu, Tripura and Odisha which already have announced pension schemes for transgenders.

According to the government records, there are around 25,000 transgenders in the state. Last year Kerala had become the first Indian state to announce a transgender policy.
Earlier this week Kochi Metro in Kerala had announced it plan to provide jobs to those from the transgender community.
