Minor Girl Dead After Eating Home-Made Ice Cream, Turns Out It Was Planned Murder By Brother

For nearly a week, Kerala was left baffled following the death of a 16-year-old girl in the northern district of Kasargod.

Ann Mary Benny, a native of Balal in Kasargod died last week while undergoing treatment for what was thought to be a case of jaundice.

On July 30, the family of four had prepared ice cream at home and the next day the Ann and her father Benny consumed it.

The next day the 16-year-old started vomiting and the father took her to hospital, where initially it was assumed that the girl was suffering from food poisoning. But since her condition did not improve, and her liver was seriously damaged, it was concluded that she had jaundice.

The family then got her discharged and took her to a traditional medicine practitioner for jaundice treatment.

But her condition did not improve and on August 5 she was again admitted to a hospital where she died.

By then her father Benny had also developed similar conditions and was admitted to another hospital.

Later it emerged that Benny's wife and the couple's elder son had also complained of vomiting and discomfort.

In all the cases the common link was the home-made ice cream.

Suspecting foul play, the police launched a probe. Initially it the suspicion was that the ingredients used for the ice cream could have been contaminated.

But a scientific examination of the ice cream found traces of rat poison in it.

During the probe, the cops learned that the couple's elder son Albin had also complained of vomiting and discomfort, but there was no trace of the poison in the blood.

On Thursday evening, he was arrested and he has reportedly confessed of poisoning the family.

The 22-year-old who was working in a hotel in Tamil Nadu had returned home due to the lockdown.

He reportedly held a grudge against the family for not liking him and his friends. He also feared that his sister who once caught him watching porn would tell the parents about it.

It was his second attempt to kill the family. A couple of weeks ago he had tried mixing rat poison in chicken curry, but since the amount was less it did not yield results.

After searching the internet he once again laid a death trap.

This time he got the family to make ice cream which was kept in two bowls, one in the freezer and the other outside.

On the night of July 31, Albin mixed the poison in the bowl inside the freezer.

While Ann and Benny consumed the ice cream the next day, the mother Bessy, ate only a little as she did not like the taste.

Albin had excused himself from eating the ice cream, claiming that he had a sore throat.

Benny whose internal organs including both kidneys and liver are damaged continues to remain critical.
