Trouble For Kunal Kamra As Lawyer Seeks Contempt Proceedings Against Him For Criticizing SC

Stand up comedian Kunal Kamra has once again found himself entangled in controversy after he sent out several tweets, criticizing the Supreme Court.

Kamra was reacting to the SC order which granted interim bail to TV anchor Arnab Goswami in the abetment of suicide case.

"The Supreme Court of this country is the the most Supreme joke of this country," Kamra said in his tweet.

He then followed it up with another tweet, which was a morphed image of the SC building painted in saffron and had a BJP flag on it.

"The pace at which the Supreme Court operates in matters of ¡°National Interests¡± it¡¯s time we replace Mahatma Gandhi¡¯s photo with Harish Salve¡¯s photo," Kamra said in a third tweet.

"DY Chandrachud is a flight attendant serving champagne to first class passengers after they¡¯re fast tracked through, while commoners don¡¯t know if they¡¯ll ever be boarded or seated, let alone served. *Justice*," his next tweet read.

"All lawyers with a spine must stop the use of the prefix ¡°Hon¡¯ble¡± while referring to the Supreme Court or its judges. Honour has left the building long back," he further said.

This however did not go down well with many, including some lawyers, and one of them, a Mumbai-based lawyer, Rizwan Siddiquee has now sought the consent of the Attorney General KK Venugopal to initiate contempt of court proceedings against the stand-up comic.

Reacting to this, senior lawyer Mahesh Jethmalani wrote on Twitter "Don¡¯t waste your time. You¡¯ll turn a lowly worm into a glow worm. He wants the glare : give him the darkness he deserves."

Kamra, who had a very controversial on-flight face-off with Arnab seems to be upset over the interim bail to the TV anchor, while courts have repeatedly failed to give the same to others including journalists and activists.

Last year, Kamra had heckled Goswami while both were on the same flight. After the video went viral, Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri had tweeted asking airlines to take action against the comic.

Despite there being no formal complaints by Goswami or the flight's captain as per the rules, IndiGo Airlines on board the incident happened banned him for six months.
