In their recent filing, Meta has warned investors that high-risk activities of their chief executive officer and founder Mark Zuckerberg "carry the risk of serious injury and death", which could have a material adverse impact on operations.
In response, Zuckerberg, who is the largest shareholder of Meta, posted a GIF stating, "High risk = high reward."
Such a risk statement has been made by Meta for the first time in the 'risk' section of its 10-K filing.
A 10-K is a comprehensive report filed annually by a publicly-traded company about its financial performance and is required by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The 10-K filing is thus a comprehensive report on Meta¡¯s activities throughout 2023.
High-risk activities of Zuckerberg
The high-risk activities that Mr Zuckerberg is involved in, as per the filing, includes combat sports, extreme sports, and recreational aviation.
The filing states that since Meta is currently dependent on the 'continued services and performance of their key personnel', including Mark Zuckerberg so in case of his unavailability, it could 'disrupt our operations and have an adverse effect on our business'.
Apart from Zuckerberg, the filing notes that other members of the management are also involved in these high-risk activities.
Jiu-jitsu to hydrofoiling
A combat sport, or fighting sport, is a contact sport that usually involves one-on-one combat, in which a participant submits the opponent with a hold, disabling the opponent or attacking the opponent in a specific or designated technique.
One combat sport is Bralizian jiu-jitsu, which Zuckerberg had picked up during the pandemic.
He had even won gold and silver medals at a Brazilian jiu-jitsu tournament in May 2023.
Brazilian jiu-jitsu is a self-defence martial art based on grappling, ground fighting, and submission holds. The emphasis lies in bringing the opponent to the ground, establishing a position of control, and employing various techniques to compel submission through joint locks or chokeholds.
Mark Zuckerberg's dedication to hand-to-hand combat resulted in him tearing his anterior cruciate ligament during training in November 2023.
Another activity Zuckerberg is involved in is hydrofoiling which is a new type of watersport. Zuckerberg first began to post about hydrofoiling in August 2019, sharing two pictures of himself on a foilboard being towed by a boat.
A hydrofoil is a specialized lifting surface, or foil, designed to function in water.
By deflecting the flow of water downward, hydrofoils generate an upward force on the craft. This upward force reduces board lag. As the boat accelerates, the hydrofoil gradually raises the hull out of the water.
