Mawsynram And Cherrapunji, The World's Wettest Places See Record Rainfalls In Past 24 Hours

As heavy rains continue across the North East, Mawsynram and Cherrapunji in Meghalaya, which are known as the wettest places in the world are also seeing record downpours.

On Friday, the Sohra region of Meghalaya's Cherrapunji recorded the third time highest rainfall with 972.0 mm of rain in 24 hours.

Third highs rainfall in Cherrapunji

This is the third-highest rainfall recorded in Sohra in 122 years. It had earlier recorded the rainfall of 1563.3 mm on 16 June 1995 and 973.8mm on 5 June 1956.

In fact, the 1563.3mm rainfall recorded on 16 June 1995 in Cherrapunji is the highest ever in India.

In the past 24 hours on Friday, Mawsynram, the wettest place in India, saw 1003.6 mm of precipitation, the highest ever on a day in June.

"Mawsynram is at present the wettest place in India, with an average annual rainfall of 11802.4 mm (average of the 1974-2022 period). Cherrapunji receives 11359.4 mm of rainfall in a year (average of the 1971-2020 period)," Sunit Das, Scientist E at IMD's regional centre in Guwahati, said.

Mawsynram and Cherrapunji had more rains than rest of India combined

The rains received both in Mawsynram and Cherrapunji is 30 times the amount of rainfall received by the entire country in June from the current Southwest monsoon. As per the IMD report, the entire country has received a cumulative rainfall of just 61.1 mm, which is a deficit of 18 percent.

"Under the influence of strong south-westerly winds from the Bay of Bengal to Northeast and adjoining east India in lower tropospheric levels, isolated extremely heavy rainfall is likely to come over Assam and Meghalaya during June 16 to 18...," IMD had said in a tweet on Thursday.

At least 18 people have died over the past two days in Meghalaya in flash floods and landslides, officials stated.

Incessant rainfall in Meghalaya has also caused a landslide in Darrang village on Darrang Shnongpdeng Road under Dawki Police Station limits in the West Jaintia Hills district. The restoration work is underway at present.

Several roads were also damaged by landslides in the East Khasi Hills district.

Flood situation worsens in Assam

In neighbouring Assam too, heavy rains are causing havoc.

Nine more people, including two children, died in rain-related incidents in Assam, raising the toll in this year's floods and landslides to 55.

A total of 18.94 lakh people have been affected by the heavy rain and subsequent flood and landslides in 28 districts of the state, the bulletin issued by Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said.
