Meet Iris, The First Generative AI Teacher At A Kerala School
Iris is a sari-clad teacher at the KTCT Higher Secondary School in Thiruvananthapuram. She is the first Generative AI school teacher in Kerala, but also in the country.
Artificial intelligence can be a great tool that can make learning easier and even fun.
That is exactly what a school in Kerala is hoping to do, with the use of a humanoid, as a teacher.
Kerala school gets AI teacher
Meet Iris, the AI-enabled humanoid robot, a sari-clad teacher at the KTCT Higher Secondary School in Thiruvananthapuram.
According to Makerlabs Edutech which introduced the AI humanoid, Iris is not just the first Generative AI school teacher in Kerala, but also in the country.
The Generative AI school teacher was unveiled last month and has become an instant hit with students.
How Iris works
Iris can speak three languages and also can answer complex questions by students.
According to MakerLabs, Iris's knowledge base is wider than that of other automated teaching tools since it is powered by generative AI, which is also employed by programs like ChatGPT.
They also said that the humanoid has not been trained on information on inappropriate subjects for the students, such as drugs, sex, and violence.
Not emotional
Iris talks in a feminine voice and has many characteristics of a human instructor, yet she is neither emotionally invested in her pupils nor is able to recognize them.
¡°The possibilities are infinite with AI. When a student asks a question, Iris generates answers that closely resemble human responses¡± Hari Sagar, CEO of MakerLabs, told The New Indian Express.
¡°Students have developed many skills through the lab, gaining hands¨Con workshop experience in various areas such as robotics, artificial intelligence, and 3D printing. These workshops have helped us realise the potential of AI and that prompted us to collaborate with MakerLabs,¡± Meera MN, the school principal said.
Following the positive feedback from students, the school which has more than 3,000 students is reportedly planning to deploy more Generative AI teachers in the next academic session.
