Meet Sojan Joseph, a Kerala-born NHS Nurse, now a British MP
The 49-year-old migrated to the UK in 2002 after completing his nursing studies in Bengaluru in 2001 and has been working as a nurse in the psychiatry department of the National Health Service.
Sojan Joseph, an Indian-origin member of the UK Parliament, has created history by becoming the first person from Kerala to be elected to the House of Commons. Joseph, who was born in Kaipuzha¡ªa small village in Kottayam district of Kerala, won from the Ashford constituency in Kent County in the UK election results announced on Friday.
Worked as a nurse since 2002
The 49-year-old migrated to the UK in 2002 after completing his nursing studies in Bengaluru in 2001 and has been working as a nurse in the psychiatry department of the National Health Service. Joseph is currently a borough councillor representing Aylesford and East Stour ward.

Celebrations at home
His father, KT Joseph, his three sisters, and other relatives who were gathered in the family home were overjoyed after hearing about his win. His mother, Elikutty, passed away three months ago, and he had visited Kerala then.
"I am very happy. A Malayalee went there and won. He calls home every day," said his proud father. His sisters said Sojan called home after his victory. "He has been there for 22 years. We were all praying for his win ever since we got to know that he was contesting in the election," one of them said.

Was never into politics
Another relative said Sojan joined the Labour Party because he held socialist ideals. A sister of Joseph said while he was in college here, he was never into politics.
"It was after he reached the UK that he developed an interest in politics, and now his and our dream has come true. Now we are just waiting for him to come to his village,¡± said the sister.
