Mumbai Doctor Steps In To Sponsor Entire Education Of UP Dalit Girl At IIT-BHU

A Mumbai doctor has stepped forward to fund the entire education of a Dalit girl student Sanskriti Ranjan, who could not deposit a fee of Rs 15,000 for seat allotment in IIT-BHU after she cracked the Joint Entrance exam (JEE) Advanced.

She secured the seat after the intervention of Justice Dinesh Kumar Singh of the Lucknow bench of Allahabad high court, who had volunteered to contribute Rs 15,000 from his own pocket.

After the report was published in several media platforms, many IIT alumni and advocates came forward to help the student.

Dr Sonal Chauhan, who is currently working as consultant MD, DMRE, MBBS at Wadia Children Hospital, Mumbai, moved the court filing an intervention application that she wanted to sponsor the student¡¯s entire study.

Appreciating the capable sections of society, especially Dr Chauhan, the bench has also asked the Central and state governments as to whether it has any scheme for the poor and deprived students who secure seats in prestigious examinations like JEE, NEET, CLAT but are not able to pay their fees.

SC helped Dalit boy secure seat at IIT-Bombay

In November, the Supreme Court came to the rescue of a Dalit boy who could not get admission to IIT-Bombay due to late payment of fees due to technical glitches.

The apex court invoked its powers under Article 142 of the Constitution to direct institute authorities to create a seat for him within 48 hours.

A bench of Justices D Y Chandrachud and A S Bopanna asked the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA), which manages and regulates the admissions, to allot a seat to the student, Prince.

The bench said that ¡°it would be a great travesty of justice if the young Dalit student is denied admission for non-payment of fees¡±.

Article 142 enables the Supreme Court to pass orders as is necessary to ensure ¡°complete justice¡± in a matter pending before it.

It said that the court shall not disturb any student that had already been admitted, but directed institute authorities to create a new seat for the student.
