Mumbai Man Drowns Trying To Save A Girl Who Fell Off A Cliff Into The Sea While Taking Selfies

A 20-year-old college girl drowned at Bandra Bandstand on Saturday.

She is believed to have been swept away in the high tide.

On seeing the incident, a youth who was standing nearby too jumped into the sea. When the incident occurred the girl along with her two friends (all girls aged around 19 and 20) have gone to take a stroll. The Bandra police and the fire brigade had reached the spot and tried saving the victims.

According to the girl's friends, they were talking selfies, standing on the rock, close to the Bandra Worli Sea Link (BWSL). "The girls were standing 50 metres away from the shore when the water suddenly rose. They did not notice water rising and remained on the rock taking pictures (selfies). One of the girls was pulled into the water due to high tide," said Bandra police senior inspector R Dhavle.

"After seeing the girl, a youth standing close to the Bandstand jumped into the water to rescue her. But he too was caught in the tide. People present at the spot immediately called the police." said the cop.

The guy managed to save two of the girls, Anjum Khan and Mastoori Khan, but drowned alongwith Tarannum Ansari while trying to save her.

All the three girls hail from Govandi locality in the eastern suburban of the city. Mumbai Police spokesperson DCP Dhananjay Kulkarni said the college going girls have gone to Bandra Bandstand for a picnic.

"One girl named Tarannum suddenly slipped from the rock. One youngster Ramesh Walunj tried to save her, but unfortunately both of them fell into the sea. Our sagari boats with the help of fire brigade are conducting the rescue operation. As this is high tide time we are facing problems in rescue operations. We are hoping that both of them are safe," said Kulkarni during the rescue.
