Mumbai Trans Harbour Link: Visitors Leave Spot With Litter After Taking Selfies
The irresponsible behavior and lack of cleanliness have appalled internet users, urging authorities to take strict action and impose hefty fines for rule violations.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, adding a 21.8-km feather to the country's infrastructure cap, connecting Sewri in Mumbai to Nhava Sheva in Raigad district. However, just hours after its opening, people were observed flouting rules and regulations.
Photos and videos circulating on social media depicted individuals stopping vehicles, taking pictures, and selfies on a stretch with a speed limit of 100 kmph. Despite the speed limit, the newly inaugurated bridge transformed into a picnic spot, attracting droves of commuters eager to experience driving on it.
Videos now viral on the internet
A Twitter page called Mumbai Matters shared a picture and wrote, ''When it's Said No Stopping On #MTHL, This has to Happen. Then Zoom and See the circled area..''

Unfortunately, this surge in visitors led to littering, with photos showing garbage strewn along the bridge. Viral posts also displayed multiple parked vehicles as commuters snapped photographs.
On the first day, approximately 9,000 vehicles traversed the sea link in 12 hours, according to data from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority.
Netizens are furious
The irresponsible behavior and lack of cleanliness have appalled internet users, urging authorities to take strict action and impose hefty fines for rule violations.
One user said, ''Sad. Need to respect all our public infrastructure. Considering the whole stretch is covered by CCTV, the culprits need to be exposed.''
Another commented, ''The government can only build new infrastructure Maintenance is the duty of the citizens Which unfortunately is not in the genes of Indians.'' A third said, ''Should penalise all these people who are stopping halting cars on MTHL.''
A fourth added, ''I think we as a society don't deserve these amenities. Everyone shows how good the infrastructure is overseas but when we try to build one we just don't respect it. Shame on us as a society.''
India's longest sea bridge
Notably, the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL) is India's longest sea bridge, significantly reducing travel time between the two points from an hour and a half to around 20 minutes. Built at a cost of ?17,840 crore, the MTHL features six lanes, with 16.5 km of its length spanning over the sea.
However, two-wheelers, auto-rickshaws, tractors, animal-drawn vehicles, and slow-moving vehicles are prohibited on the bridge.
