NASA Predicts Mangalore & Mumbai To Be First Indian Cities To Submerge Due To Climate Change
NASA has made a worrying forecast about Indian cities that will be the first ones to bear the brunt of global warming and rising sea levels. A team of scientists introduced a new tool to predict what cities will be affected by melting ice sheet. Mangalore Mumbai and Kakinada Andhra Pradesh feature within the top ten cities.
NASA has made a worrying forecast about Indian cities that will be the first ones to bear the brunt of global warming and rising sea levels.
A team of scientists introduced a new tool to predict what cities will be affected by melting ice sheet, and in it, Mangalore, Mumbai and Kakinada (Andhra Pradesh), feature within the top ten cities.

The tool is called a gradient fingerprint mapping (GFM), developed by the scientists at the US space agency¡¯s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
The melting glaciers can push up sea levels for 293 major port cities, including three from India ¨C Mangalore, Mumbai in Maharashtra and Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh.

The findings, published in the journal Science Advances, suggest Mangalore in Karnataka and Mumbai are at a high risk of encountering floods due to melting ice caps.
The study suggests that in the next 100 years, the glacial melt may potentially lead to a rise in Mangalore's sea level by 15.98cm and to 15.26cm in Mumbai.

"As cities and countries attempt to build plans to mitigate flooding, they have to be thinking about 100 years in the future and they want to assess risk in the same way that insurance companies do," said Erik Ivins, senior scientist at NASAs Jet Propulsion Laboratory in the US.
