After Rs 10 In Cash & Gold, Nashik Man Now Demands Rare Tortoise, Black Labrador As Dowry
A man from Nashik, Maharashtra left his future in-laws stunned after he demanded a tortoise with 21 nails, a black labrador as dowry. The accused, who works in the Indian Army and is posted in Assam was engaged to a girl from Aurangabad in February.
Though it is illegal, people demanding cash, gold, car, bike, house as dowry are pretty common in our county. But a man from Nashik, Maharashtra left his future in-laws stunned after he demanded a tortoise with 21 nails, a black Labrador as dowry.
The accused, who works in the Indian Army and is posted in Assam was engaged to a girl from Aurangabad in February.
Before the engagement, the girl's family had given him gold worth Rs 2 lakh and another Rs 10 lakh in cash, which he said was to get her a permanent government job.
But after the engagement, he failed to get her the job and started making other demands to the girl's family.
Bizarre demands
This included a rare 21-nailed turtle, which is considered auspicious and a black Labrador dog.
But as the girl's family could not get the rare reptile, which can cost between Rs 5-10 lakh in the illegal wildlife trade, the groom's family threatened to pull out of the wedding.
Following this, the family approached the Osmanpura police who have booked the groom and five of his relatives.
FIR registered
An FIR has been registered under sections 420, 406 and 34 of IPC for criminal breach of trust and cheating against the groom and his family.
¡°Following the engagement ceremony, would-be groom and his parents, citing auspiciousness, asked the bride¡¯s family to get a 21-nailed tortoise, a black canine and traditional lamp as part of the dowry,¡± Osmanpura police station inspector Dilip Tare said.
According to the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961, 'dowry' means any property or valuable security given or agreed to be given either directly or indirectly and both giving and taking dowry is a punishable crime.
