Police FIR claims self-inflicted injuries
In an appalling development, the police have not shared the nature of injuries on P Jeyaraj and his son Bennix, even after 24 hours of post-mortem.
Moreover, the FIR lodged by police states that the deceased men have injured themselves by rolling on the ground, according to a report by The Times of India.
The post mortem reports were submitted to the Madurai bench of The Madras High Court after it took suo moto cognizance of the incident.
In a letter to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), DMK MP Kanimozhi said, ¡°the police officials had inserted a baton into the anus of Mr. Bennicks that had triggered uncontrolled bleeding and further the police officials had beaten Mr. Jayaraj and had kicked him on his chest multiple times with their shoes."
The family of Jeyaraj and Bennix had earlier refused to accept their bodies and accused two policemen of torturing them to death.
Later, they accepted the bodies after Kovilpatti judicial magistrate assured them that justice would be done.
Jeyaraj and Bennix were arrested on June 19 and lodged in Kovilpatti sub-jail for keeping their mobile phone shop in the Sathankulam main bazaar area open during curfew imposed during coronavirus lockdown.
They were later admitted to the Kovilpatti government hospital on June 22. While the son died on the same night, the father breathed his last on June 23 morning.
According to reports, two Senior Inspectors have been suspended while departmental action is also being taken against two chief guards of the jail.
